The book of Esther is a violent story with ancient practices that we should unambiguously denounce as wrong, but Cham does not rest with such critical distance from the nitty gritty of the experiences of characters in the story.
She draws readers into the human emotions of Vashti, Xerxes, Haman, Mordecai, and—most of all-Esther so that we can not only relate to their trials and tribulations but also see a message from God. On top of all that, she gives us glimpses of her own life that testify to the value of these faith lessons.

While Dr. Cham’s work explores broad themes and universal lessons for all, women will find her work especially meaningful. It is a work with multiple potential uses. It can be used devotionally, for personal and group bible studies, and as an insightful source for sermonic preparation.
Dr Cham’s work is a refreshing look at the life of Esther, the thrilling episode of a young woman who ends up being more than just the hometown girl who makes good, but one who, with the help of pivotal people around her, learns to face her fears, trust her God, own who she is and use her power and privilege to become a divine instrument of liberation for her people.

Reading CHOSEN was both inspiring and therapeutic. CHOSEN challenged my knowledge of the story of Esther as well as my interpretation of it. I found myself learning valuable life lessons from each of the main characters and from Ashley’s personal life – as she weaves her own spiritual journey into the book, while at the same time giving the reader a front row seat into the lives of these OT figures.
CHOSEN is a fresh and modern commentary on a story of the Bible that we think we know well yet often fail to find relevant application in it for our lives today. Ashley seasons CHOSEN with real life application and invites the reader to do some healthy self-examination in every chapter. CHOSEN is very well written and thought provoking.
